Some change how people use the web, others are gone within months. For a small business, the right question is not what is fashionable, but what helps a visitor trust you and buy.

These are the 2026 trends we see making a difference in our clients' projects, in Portugal and the UK.

1. Speed first

The most beautiful design is useless if the page is slow to open on a phone. In 2026 the best sites treat speed as part of the design: light images, fewer third-party scripts and fonts hosted on the site itself. A fast site converts better and is easier to find on Google.

2. Sites built for AI

More and more people ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Mode instead of searching. Those systems read your site like a very hurried reader. Clear headings, direct answers at the top of each section, structured data and well-organised HTML help AI understand and cite your business. Some already call this designing for machines.

3. Content before layout

The projects that go best start with the words and the structure, not the colours. First we decide what each page has to answer and in what order; the design then makes it easy to read. It sounds obvious, but many sites are still designed around stock photos and filler text.

4. Bento grids and modular blocks

Tile layouts with blocks of different sizes are still strong. They work well for showing services, numbers or product features at a glance, with a clear hierarchy. The practical advantage is that they adapt well to mobile.

5. Micro-animations with a purpose

Small movements that confirm an action, like a button that responds or a product dropping into the cart, make the experience clearer. What does not work is animation everywhere. Our rule: if the animation does not help people understand something, it goes. And we always respect people who ask for less motion in their system settings.

6. Dark mode and accessibility from the start

Offering light and dark themes is no longer an extra. At the same time, contrast, form labels and keyboard navigation have become a legal requirement for many online stores in the EU under the European Accessibility Act. Designing with this in mind from day one costs far less than fixing it later.

What you can ignore

Heavy 3D effects that slow the page without helping sales

Layouts so experimental that visitors cannot find the menu

Constantly moving text that is hard to read

Full redesigns every year just to look current

A trend is only worth it when it serves your customers.
